Diamond jubilee: "I am Alexian brother - and that is a good thing!" This June, Alexian Brother Laurentius, born Heinz Herber, celebrated his diamond jubilee. It does not happen often that one of our members can look back over sixty years in the Alexian community. That is why we celebrated Brother Laurentius'anniversary in great style on Whit Monday, 10 June in Eddersheim, the home town of the celebrant in South Hesse.
Heinz Herber is a true "Son of Eddersheim" and spent his special day in the company of the families of his two brothers Leonhard and Karl. The service of thanksgiving was celebrated by Father Albert Seelbach, a dear friend of Brother Laurentius from youth.
Heinz Herber grew up in a Catholic family and served as an altar boy and a caroller. He soon got involved with the Catholic Youth organisation. In 1956, he was among the founders of the Young Christian Workers branch in the Frankfurt region.
In 1959, he joined the order of the Alexian Brotherhood in Neuss and lived for many years at the monastery. Heinz Herber chose the monastic name Laurentius and trained as a nurse. Over the years, he served the community in many different roles. For a long time, Brother Laurentius acted as sexton and took care of the graveyard. Even in retirement, he took on many tasks in and around the monastery.
The Provincial of the Alexian Brotherhood Brother Dominikus was present at the service and congratulated Brother Laurentius to his anniversary on behalf of the entire community. He thanked him for his faith in prayer, his dedication to the community and his testimony as an Alexian brother who has seen many changes within the order, as it became smaller and its members got older. We wish to thank the members of the Herber family who for all these years have always been in close contact with "Uncle Heinz", and whose contributions to the church service were greatly appreciated - especially the lovely music.
Since the closure of the monastery at Alexianerplatz in Neuss, Brother Laurentius has been living in the retirement home at Augustinusstrasse run by the Augustinian sisters of Neuss. At his new home, he is still involved in charitable work and never fails to encourage and cheer up the people around him.
Brother Laurentius will be 85 this year, and we want to congratulate him in advance to this special birthday, sending him our best wishes, and ask for God's blessing.
