Brother Raphael Bernhardt CFA joined the Congregation of the Alexian Brothers in December 1964, receiving his religious habit and name at the motherhouse in Aachen.
First, Brother Raphael completed his training as a nurse at the Hospital Maria-Hilf Krefeld School of Nursing. Following the guiding principle of St. Vincent de Paul – The sick, the poor and the weak are our masters– Brother Raphael worked for the Alexian Congregation for more than fifty-five years as a nurse. Brother Raphael’s final years saw him working at the Alexian workshops and the Münster Werkcafé, a daycare centre for people with disabilities.
Brother Raphael was a highly educated and cosmopolitan man. He was extremely well-liked amongst the residents and colleagues at Alexian institutions. His commitment to those on the margins of society guided his life in the Alexian Brothers. He was especially dedicated to people with disabilities. The Christian faith served as a foundation for his life and work. We bid farewell to our Brother in grief and gratitude.
